William Maiben's Memorial Service information:
WILLIAM MAIBEN, Skyline class of 1970

Award-winning Utah composer William Maiben died in Salt Lake City on May 24, 2012 after a prolonged illness. Maiben ‘s compositions include a concerto for two violins and orchestra, a comic opera, Snowbird, several song cycles, electronic music, rock music (William Love, Montgomery Rock), solo piano music, and a large catalog of chamber music, including eight string quartets.

... As a young man William was intellectually precocious, publishing social systems research in the Journal of Sociometry and winning a math scholarship to the University of Utah at age 16. He studied piano in Salt Lake City with Ricks Knudson and Gladys Gladstone, completed a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition at Oberlin Conservatory, a Masters degree at the University of Washington, and did doctoral work in composition at Columbia University with Vladimir Ussachevsky. He was awarded the Charles Ives Scholarship by the American Society of Composers and Publishers.

An accomplished pianist, William was several times a finalist in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. A champion of "music from the beyond," he frequently performed music channeled by Rosemary Brown and others. His New York debut recital, an all-Debussy program in Carnegie Recital Hall garnered praise from Bernard Holland in The New York Times: “ Mr. Maiben has built a solid base on which to rest his interpretations of Debussy. His technique is reliable; he has respect for the composer’s rhythmic subtleties; and above all he seems to love this great music as it deserves to be loved.” Recent releases on the Sunrise Records label include this Debussy program with long-time collaborator John Rukavina, Maiben’s own Waltzes for solo piano, and Bela Bartok’s album For Childrem.

While at Skyline High School, William built a large circle of friends through his musical accomplishments and his social systems research. Many of his friends and acquaintances participated in the research that led to analyzing and mapping the social structure of his peer group. His transcription of “Love is Blue” was performed by the Skyline Orchestra, East High Orchestra, and the Granite Jr. and Youth Symphonies, in which he alternately played cello, percussion, xylophone, oboe, and piano. William and his friend Lester Abbey founded the Cro-Magnon Society, a social club at Skyline with a continuous history and membership since 1969.

William is survived by his sisters Dana Maiben of Massachusetts and Dina Maiben of New Jersey, a daughter, Briana Feinberg and grandson Ellias, of Philadelphia, an uncle Dean Maiben, of Chicago, numerous cousins, and many friends and colleagues. On Sunday May 27 at 3 pm, there will be a memorial service in the visionary art environment of the Gilgal Sculpture Garden, 749 East 500 South in Salt Lake City.

Update: William Maiben. June 15, 1953 - May 24, 2012 (He was bumped up a grade or so - so yes 1953)

It was so AWESOME that William received lots and lots of email - mostly delivered to his room yesterday. And yes, he read each and every one. He was so happy and so impressed that people remembered him. William passed away peacefully this morning at 9:15 am. He rallied a bit last night, his sense of humor still there. In the early hours of the morning, he stated it was time for him to go to sleep. He basically kicked us out of the room after hours of keeping company. He is one unforgettable character. I will miss him. We had met for lunch monthly over the last few months.

William pretty much died with nothing of value, just things that were important to him. After being homeless for a lon...g time, he was a resident of a group home - Safe Haven. SO - for those of you who knew him and would like to donate to help with the costs, donations of ANY AMOUNT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. His sister, Dana, who also went to Skyline and was in orchestra with me, is trying her hardest to have a small service this Sunday, May 27. Details to follow. Dana is here in Salt Lake this week but lives in the Boston area.

Please send any donations to:
